“Are contact lenses appropriate, or even safe, for my child to wear?”
Many parents ask me those questions. Our practice, Hellerstein & Brenner Vision Center PC, has been successfully fitting contact lenses on children, even as young as 1 years old. When the kids as this young, it is usually for a very specific visual or medical issue. It is really more of the parent’s responsibility to take care of the contact lenses and insert them into their children’s eye.
New research suggests that 8-11 year olds can handle the responsibility of contact lenses. This is the age range when more of our young patients are fitted.
To learn more about fitting children with contact lenses, read a short article by Dr. Carole Hong, my esteemed friend and colleague in CA. To have your child evaluated for contact lenses, check out the Hellerstein & Brenner Vision website.
