Recently, the Archives of Ophthalmology published the results of a study that has its basis in developmental vision. The study confirmed what developmental optometrists have known for years: bifocal glasses can help to slow the progression of nearsightedness in children. The study involved 153 children ages 8 to 13 that were randomly selected to receive bifocals instead of single vision glasses to correct their nearsightedness. The results were dramatic as children wearing the bifocal glasses needed 1/3 less subsequent correction, and children wearing prismatic bifocals needing ½ less subsequent correction.
