Journal of the American Optometric Association (7/2011)
Dr. Timothy Petito, book reviewer for the Journal of the American Optometric Association (optometrists National Organization), makes it clear that my book, See It. Say It. Do It! The Parent’s & Teacher’s Action Guide to Creating Successful Students & Confident Kids is “written not for the clinicians, scientists, physicians, or professors. ”It is written for our patients, our patients’ parents, and for “us” who are parents, atheltes, or still students of something who may not have mastered all subjects or tasks a easily as we would like”. Dr. Petito continues, …this book is just what the doctor ordered; it gives a blueprint of how to turn a frustrated child into an achiever…” He concludes, “See It. Say It. Do It! doesn’t take long to read but it could have a life-long impact on those who need to know what it says”.

“This book presented a whole new way to see education and the process of learning. For years classroom learning (thus grades, self-image, etc.) has been biased in favor of the auditory- sequential learners, but not everyone is so inclined. What a wonderful explanation as to how others see the world. It should be required reading for every educator. I would like to see an adult version for people to understand how they learn best, to assist struggling college students or to just help people understand why they missed what they missed in grade school when they couldn’t follow the teacher’s lectures. The author is credible and presents her credentials clearly.”

“If you raise or teach a young gifted or 2e child who faces certain potential blocks or challenges in learning, Hellerstein’ book, See It. SayIt. Do It! should be useful in working with that child to address his or her challenges. Those challenges might relate to visual processing, but they might also be along the lines of dealing with stress, building confidence, or learning how to achieve overall at school.”

The intent of this book is clearly stated in its title … See It. Say It. Do It! The Parent’s & Teacher’s Action Guide to Creating Successful Students and Confident Kids is well organized and the graphics are attractively and professionally done. The target audience is parents and teachers; nevertheless, other professionals can use all or parts of the model in enhancing the care of their patients or clients.

“It’s easy to say to do well in school, but actually doing it proves much more difficult. See It. Say It. Do It! : The Parent’s & Teacher’s Action Guide to Creating Successful Students & Confident Kids is a guide to helping students really gain a more consistent performance in school when they seem generally smart, bright students who just seem to shut down during school hours. Anxiety, confidence issues, fear are issues discussed so gifted children can use their gift, be it in academics or sports. See It. Say It. Do It! is a fine read well worth considering for parents and teachers who don’t want to see potential wasted.”

In her book, See It, Say It, Do It! Developmental Optometrist Dr. Lynn F. Hellerstein has outlined not only visual processing problems, but how to get great vision health though fun easy games. Lynn has worked with adults and children to gain strong vision health for 30 years and also incorporated it into her own parenting with her daughters. I found reading this book entertaining and wanting to jump into the games and exercises right away. Our sons have already started vision therapy, this is a great accompaniment to what we are already doing at home. To read the entire review, click here

It is an honor to say that I know Lynn Hellerstein, OD, author of See it. Say it. Do It! This is a wonderful book which I believe should be part of every school and public library, made available to every teacher in the country, and wish every parent would obtain and read as well. But I don’t think it should just be for children — this is actually an amazing book for adults who are wanting to have better performance mentally and physically.
