Just looking at Dr. Hellerstein’s credentials would assure you that you’re in good hands with eye care. She has been working with children and adults who have difficulties in learning or vision perception for over 40 years.  Her knowledge on the field of the brain and eye function is so extensive that she is invited by 5 colleges to be an adjunct professor.  She has done great things for people to improve their visual skills. For example, Reynold Kalstrom (picture below on the left) gives a big thanks to her help as he improved his vision to be a top iron man athlete competing well into his 80s.  Also, Dr. Hellerstein is a location for supporting the youth of Denver though a nonprofit, Von’s Vision (picture below on the right) that is founded by Bronco star defensive end Von Miller.

Thanks to Dr. Len Press for his blog review of this great book by Dr. Robin Mcevoy and Kim Gangwish…Child Decoded

The lead editor of this helpful “owner’s manual” for parents serving as effective advocates for their child is Robin E McEvoy, a developmental neuropsychologist practicing in Denver, Colorado.  She is joined in this endeavor by Kim Gangwish, a specialist in a form of acupressure focusing on neurological integration (LEAP – Learning Enhancement Acupressure Program) and Marjike Jones, a freelance writer whose son, CJ, serves as the opening story and represents the enigmatic child prototypical in this book.

Child Decoded is a wonderful resource that caught my eye specifically because of the concise chapter on Vision Disorder Issues, authored by our good colleague and friend, Dr. Lynn Hellerstein.  Every time you read a new book like Child Decoded you’re bound to pick up at least a nugget or two in each chapter, and Dr. Hellerstein’s chapter is a good case in point.  She relates a pearl from another behavioral optometrist, Dr. Rebecca Hutchins that is very clever.  At a conference for teachers Dr. Hutchins and a colleague distributed prism glasses to the audience that simulated convergence insufficiency, asking them to read for several minutes.  Even after this short interval of time, attendees began to experience dramatic effects including headaches, fatigue, and difficulty in remembering what they were reading!

Insurance companies, Like Anthem, are refusing to pay for vision therapy for the diagnosis of convergence insufficiency.  Anthem wants 12 weeks of home-based vision therapy documented (pencil push-ups) before they will consider in-office treatment.

This is ridiculous!  See letter below to insurance companies:

It is VERY clear in the literature that “home-based therapy” is INSUFFICIENT to replace office-based vision therapy in patients with symptomatic convergence insufficiency.  What is the rationale to delay treatment for patients with convergence insufficiency, when appropriate treatment (office-based vision therapy) is well documented in the literature?  This only keeps the patient unnecessarily in the symptomology stage for an additional 12 weeks.  There is NO BASIS or support to request 12 weeks of home-based therapy prior to the well-documented treatment of choice for this condition.

Optometric vision therapy is based upon a medically necessary plan of treatment, which is designed to improve specific vision dysfunctions determined by standardized diagnostic criteria.  Treatment plans encompass lenses, prisms, occlusion and other appropriate materials, modalities and equipment.

Studies in peer reviewed journals document the treatment of choice for convergence insufficiency is office-based vision therapy, and that home-based vision therapy is NOT effective.  Click Home_Based_Therapy_for_Symptomatic_Convergence, CITT_Arch_2008, CI-Major-Review-copy,  Vision Therapy and Convergence Insufficiency What Parents Need to Know – NCLD.

I just returned from a fabulous conference:  the `7th Annual Conference for Global Transformation in Monterey, CA.

What a miracle occurred.  I was honored to give one of the keynotes.  Topic was:  Expand Your Vision Beyond Sight.  The keynote was about my personal health crisis in 2002, which ended up being a gift of vision transformation for myself personally as well as for the 1000s of patients I work with and speak to.

Our vision does not limit us.  We limit our vision with our beliefs, behaviors and attitudes.  Expand your vision.  See beyond the predictable!

Imagine a life…where miracles occur frequently.  In the presenece of an expanded awareness, a miracle, you are left with a choice  You can think, speak and act consistent with the new awrenenss or more likely, you will explain away the new world in terms from the past…

We’ve know for years that we can successfully treat amblyopia in older children and adults.  Previously, ophthalmologic literature stated that the window for treatment was before 7-9 years of age.

Finally, research is catching up to developmental optometry’s belife of amblyopia treatment.

“Using augmented-reality (AR) display systems, scientists have restored visual function in the amblyopic (lazy) eyes of patients outside of the currently accepted window for treatment. The research is being presented at the 2017 Annual Meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) this week in Baltimore, Md.

In the study, 15 adults with anisometropic (unequal focus) amblyopia in one eye ― whose amblyopia could not be corrected using traditional therapy ― performed daily activities while wearing a dual camera, head-mounted AR system at home for at least 1.5 hours a day for at least six weeks. Improvements from the training program were maintained at the two-month follow-up point.

The treatment window for amblyopia is currently believed to exist from birth to at least age 17. Abstract title: A dichoptic augmented-reality paradigm as a treatment for adult amblyopes Presentation start/end time: Monday, May 8, 2017, 10:00 – 10:15am Location: Room 324 Abstract number: 3829”

Harvard study showing how meditation not only reduces stress, but also changes your brain.

Sara Lazar, a neuroscientist at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, was one of the first scientists to take the anecdotal claims about the benefits of meditation and mindfulness and test them in brain scans. What she found surprised her — that meditating can literally change your brain. She explains:

Q: Why did you start looking at meditation and mindfulness and the brain?

Lazar: A friend and I were training for the Boston marathon. I had some running injuries, so I saw a physical therapist who told me to stop running and just stretch. So I started practicing yoga as a form of physical therapy. I started realizing that it was very powerful, that it had some real benefits, so I just got interested in how it worked….

Q: What did you find?

Lazar: We found differences in brain volume after eight weeks in five different regions in the brains of the two groups. In the group that learned meditation, we found thickening in four regions:

1. The primary difference, we found in the posterior cingulate, which is involved in mind wandering, and self relevance.

2. The left hippocampus, which assists in learning, cognition, memory and emotional regulation.

3.  The temporo parietal junction, or TPJ, which is associated with perspective taking, empathy and compassion.

4. An area of the brain stem called the Pons, where a lot of regulatory neurotransmitters are produced.

The amygdala, the fight or flight part of the brain which is important for anxiety, fear and stress in general. That area got smaller in the group that went through the mindfulness-based stress reduction program.

The change in the amygdala was also correlated to a reduction in stress levels.
